012 Reading Festival

Writing to be read

What’s your story?

Do you have a clever, funny, dramatic, and thoughtful script? You have a story to share? To make an audience laugh or cry – make them feel something? We are looking for you and we can get you published too…

The Writers Lab in collaboration with DiArtskonageng is looking for bold, new theatre work to develop towards publication. The 012 Reading Festival aims to generate original, exciting new content by contemporary voices writing for the stage. Plays can be fun-spirited or political, funny or dramatic. The festival is a platform to reach new audiences and theatre producers.

Playwrights are encouraged to write original plays that provoke conversation and are theatrically bold.

Submission Guidelines:

  • ALL writers  are encouraged to submit
  • Entry is FREE
  • The work must be an original script for stage
  • Write in any language, (translations may be requested for adjudicators.)
  • Plays can be any length (Short Plays, One-Act, and Full Length)

Selection Process:

Plays should be submitted by August 15, 2019 here. These will be read and evaluated by a reading panel comprised of theatre artists and community members. The panel will select eight (8) plays for the 012 Reading Festival. The selection will be based on story, originality, theatricality, structure, and execution.

We are looking for plays which ask sharp questions of what it means to be living now. We want a plurality of voices and stories that reflect the diversity of our contemporary society.

Once the texts have been selected, the writers will work to develop a staged reading of their work. To assist writers to develop and hone their craft, The Writers Lab will arrange and run scriptwriting/reading workshops prior to the final festival reading.  DiArtskonageng will also hold self-publishing workshops.

The reading of the plays of the shortlisted writers will take place over one weekend. The best script(s) will be published.
